Steven Staal was appointed ILRI’s Regional Representative for East and Southeast Asia in February 2013. He has some 20 years of experience in agricultural research and extension in Africa and Asia. He was formerly director of ILRI’s livestock market opportunities research theme, based in Nairobi, and worked with partners to identify and advocate opportunities for the poor to exploit livestock markets in a number of countries in Africa and Asia. Since joining ILRI in 1996 as an agricultural economist, he has led research on smallholder competitiveness, transaction costs and policies in livestock markets, and the spatial evolution and intensification of smallholder crop-livestock production systems. He holds a PhD degree in agricultural economics from the University of Florida. He is currently based in Los Baños, Philippines.
